To keep with our Snow Theme this month I chose cotton balls as a base for the Sensory Tub. I also added foam snowflakes. I found some button snowflakes, trees, snowmen and mittens. They are small and fall to the bottom of the tub but I figured it would be fun to have to 'dig' in the snow to find things! I have a scoop spoon and magnifying glasses as well.
I made these two snowmen out of Styrofoam balls. They are held together with toothpicks. I glued the carrot noses, hat, and bird on the foam and used a sharpie marker to make eyes and buttons. The point of these is to practice making a snowman. Although toothpicks are pointed they are not sharp and with close observation I feel it is safe for Jake to use for this activity.
I took them apart and modeled for him how they are put together. He watched intently and immediately wanted to try. At first he just tried placing the balls together so I had to show him how to push the balls together to get the ball on the toothpick. He quickly became obsessed. He really enjoyed doing this and I loved watching him put them together with his little bottom lip sticking out as he did it!
He spent most of the time playing with the styrofoam snowmen and surely mastered the skill but I am certain he will continue to play with the snowmen as well as the other items in the tub!
I love the sensory box! My favorie part is the foam snowman. I've recently found your blog and am a follower. i've enjoyed your posts so far. I've included your post on my weekly favorites here: http://play2grow.blogspot.com/2011/01/weekly-favorites-for-january-9-2011.html
